Working Side by Side

When volunteers from Ruhl's Church in Manheim, Pennsylvania arrived at Christina's home in Putnam County, they came prepared for a busy week. Their to-do list included replacing a deteriorated exterior door that had allowed water damage, installing safer kitchen flooring, repairing damaged siding, resurfacing the deck and stairs, and giving the home a fresh coat of paint.

By Friday afternoon, the transformation was impossible to miss.

The weathered brown exterior had been replaced with a welcoming shade of blue, the home's entrance was secure again, and years of wear had given way to a renewed sense of pride. In fact, the work caught the attention of a neighbor, who stopped by to ask which contractors had completed the project because it looked so good.

But what made the week memorable wasn't just the repairs.

Christina has called this house home for nearly 30 years. As the primary caregiver for her son, home isn't simply where she lives; it's where she provides comfort, stability, and care every day. Throughout the week, she wasn't watching from the sidelines. She rolled up her sleeves and worked alongside the volunteers, painting, helping where she could, and sharing plenty of conversation along the way.

Each afternoon, the group gathered under the shade of a tree for lunch. Tools were set aside as stories were shared about life in West Virginia and Pennsylvania. What began as a volunteer project quickly felt more like neighbors spending time together. Before heading home each evening, the volunteers often made sure Christina had leftovers from dinner so she wouldn't have to worry about cooking after spending the day working beside them.

The team from Ruhl's Church included both first-time volunteers and returning participants, each bringing their own skills and willingness to serve. By the end of the week, they left having done much more than repair a home; they had built friendships and strengthened the connections that make communities resilient.

At Rebuilding Together Charleston, we believe every repair project is about more than lumber, paint, or flooring. It's about helping neighbors remain safe at home while creating opportunities for people to come together in meaningful ways.

By Friday afternoon, the repairs were complete, but the week's greatest accomplishment couldn't be measured in gallons of paint or new flooring. It was found in the conversations shared over lunch, the laughter between coats of paint, and the friendships formed between people who, just a few days earlier, had never met.

That's what happens when neighbors come together. Homes grow stronger.
And so do communities.
