Welcome Home Westside: A First Step Toward Lasting Change

Behind the freshly painted walls and new flooring at 1002 Grant Street is a story that runs much deeper than home renovation. It’s the first chapter of something bigger: a collaborative effort to reinvest in a neighborhood full of history, resilience, and potential.

This spring, Rebuilding Together Charleston quietly partnered with the Religious Coalition for Community Renewal (RCCR) and Westside Together to launch a new initiative we’re calling Welcome Home Westside. This project marks our first concentrated investment in a specific area of the West Side of Charleston, where we’re working alongside neighbors to create safer, healthier housing and stronger community ties.

The vision is simple: listen to the people who live here, identify homes that need repairs or revitalization, and match them with trusted contractors and committed volunteers, just like we did with the Grant Street home.

RCCR acquired the house through the Charleston Land Reuse Agency. From there, we got to work, quietly and steadily. Rebuilding Together Charleston coordinated local volunteers, while RCCR leveraged funding and led the large-scale construction and renovation work. Together, we transformed a long-vacant house into a safe, welcoming home. Through RCCR’s Homeownership Program, this house will now be sold to a first-time homebuyer, helping one more family plant roots and thrive on Charleston’s West Side.

On July 8th, we celebrated this milestone with an Open House and Block Party, inviting the community to tour the completed home, meet the volunteers who made it happen, and explore another recently renovated property on the same block. It was a powerful reminder that when we invest in people, and in place, we begin to restore not just homes, but hope.
