From Risk to Renewal: A Deck That Makes a Difference

9/2/2025

Mary has lived in her home since 1998. Over the years, her house has been more than just four walls; it’s where she’s built memories, found comfort, and felt a sense of belonging. For someone living with a disability, the security and familiarity of home are especially important. But as time went on, part of her home meant to keep her safe started to fail her.

The deck off the back of Mary’s house was built to serve as an emergency exit, giving her another way out of the house if the front door was ever blocked. Unfortunately, the deck had seen better days. Many of the boards were rotten and soft, creating the danger of stepping through them. The steps had long ago rotted away completely, leaving her with no safe way to get down. Instead of providing safety and peace of mind, the deck had become an accident waiting to happen.

When Mary applied for help through Rebuilding Together Charleston, we knew this wasn’t just a repair project; it was about restoring security and independence. That’s when the timing aligned perfectly with a visiting group of volunteers from Aberdeen, Maryland.

The crew had traveled several hours to spend time in our community, dedicating a week to service. They showed up ready to work, with energy and compassion in equal measure. On Mary’s project, they rolled up their sleeves and got to work tearing out the old, unsafe deck. Piece by piece, they dismantled the structure that had become too dangerous to use.
For Mary, this new deck means more than just wood and nails. It means peace of mind knowing she has a safe way out of her home if she ever needs it. It means being able to enjoy her outdoor space again without fear of injury. It means confidence and independence, things many of us take for granted.

For the Aberdeen crew, the project was more than just a build. It was about connecting with someone in need, hearing her story, and seeing firsthand the impact of their work. Service trips like these are reminders that a few days of hard work can change someone’s daily life for years to come.

At Rebuilding Together Charleston, we are grateful for volunteers like the Aberdeen team, who travel far from home to make a difference in the lives of neighbors they may never have met otherwise. And we’re grateful for the chance to walk alongside homeowners like Mary, ensuring their homes remain safe, warm, and accessible.
