Sherry has called her home “a blessing” since the day she moved in back in 1984. Now 66 years old and living alone, she faces daily challenges that most of us don’t often think about, especially since she’s on oxygen full-time. For Sherry, even simple tasks like stepping into the shower or walking down her front steps became stressful and, at times, dangerous. With the support of our team and volunteers, things began to change. With the help of a trusted contractor, we installed a walk-in shower, allowing Sherry to bathe safely without fear of falling. Volunteers from River Ridge Church – Charleston Campus also stepped up, installing a sturdy shower chair, repairing rotting steps at the front of her home, and building a small ramp out back, (the main way she gets in and out of her home) to make it easier and safer for her to reach her car. These aren’t just home improvements, they’re life improvements. Sherry can now move more freely and confidently inside and outside her home. This work helps her maintain her independence, reduce the risk of injury, and continue living in the place she’s loved for four decades. Nationally, more than 3 million older adults are treated in emergency rooms every year for fall-related injuries. Many of these incidents happen in bathrooms, on stairs, or near entryways, exactly the areas we were able to improve for Sherry. Through our Safe at Home program, we focus on practical, targeted repairs like these that directly impact health and safety.
If you want to help make repairs like these possible for more neighbors like Sherry, restoring safety, independence, and dignity, donate here and be part of the impact. Comments are closed.
