"I can't believe this is really happening...to me of all people!"
It's Really Happening
When Sandy applied to receive help from RTC, she didn't believe she would receive the help she needed. When our Executive Director Allison made a home visit, she still had her doubts. During the home visit, Allison noted several projects that needed to be addressed to make her home warm, safe and dry.
Her kitchen cabinets were hanging off the wall, the kitchen sink had leaked and in turn rotted the cabinet underneath. To make matters worse, she couldn't safely get out of her house in case of emergency. Her back porch had weathered throughout the years and wasn't safe anymore and her wrought iron railing at the front door had rusted through and was just waiting to be pushed the wrong way.
The first week of March rolled around and RTC along with CROSS Ministires, hosted a mission team from Maine and a college group from Frostburg, MD. Allison called Sandy Monday morning and told her she had 22 volunteers coming to start work on her home. Sandy was so overwhelmed all week, and through the tears of happiness she kept saying, "I can't believe this is happening...to me of all people!"
The teams did all the repairs she needed and they felt moved to go the extra step. They added trim to around door frames as well as door knobs. They bought an installed a closet door since the old one had a hole in it. They also realized that Sandy had bought paint for her living room and kitchen but wasn't able to paint by herself. The work team also presented Sandy a prayer blanket they made and brought all the way from Main for her to have. Needless to say, she got a home she not only felt safe in, but also made some wonderful new friends.
